In her chat show, Sara interviews two astronauts who’ve recently returned from Mars.

Director's Notes:

Says teacher Mr. McClintock:

The girls wanted to make a film about space travel. But given that the school has yet to start a space programme they decided that a chat show format would be a good idea to relay their facts from the ‘mission’. They used a variety of encyclopedias and the BBC Focus magazine for information.

SciCast Notes:

This is a textbook example of how to film an interview. Count the shots:

  1. the wide, showing the three actors and their relationship to each other
  2. Close-up of the presenter, Sara.
  3. The guest astronauts, in what’s called a ‘Two Shot.’

With a real chat show you’d do this by running three cameras at once, but my guess is that the team have performed the scene once for each camera position, and then edited between them to produce a seamless flow of finished film. It’s so well done, you don’t notice the technical details at all.

In fact, it’s all made to look so effortless, it’s easy to overlook the amount of information in the film. There’s lots crammed in here, and barely a line fluffed.

A technical tour de force, then. Great stuff.
