A simple model of a car’s central locking system, and how it works.

Director's Notes:

We got the idea for this from our Transistion Year Physics teacher. He originally got it from the web — but we couldn’t find the original web site!

SciCast Notes:

Nominee: Institute of Physics Best SciCast Physics Film, 2008

Ooooh, could we have a winner on our hands? This is a nice demonstration of a simple solenoid, put into practical context by illustrating its use in car central locking systems, and with some genuinely funny bits of business to help keep everyone interested. Watch out particularly for the giant card clapperboard. Well, I laughed, anyway. Too bad I’m not one of the judges — we’ll have to see what they think!

As well as the funnies, the film’s also notable for good big close-ups, a clear explanation, and holding its way through a complex sequence of scenes and shots. There’s lots in this, crammed into two and a half minutes, but it doesn’t feel rushed — well done for keeping it together, folks!
