Using boiling water, a beaker, a bottle and a balloon we can make a ‘killer snowman’. How very festive!

Director's Notes:

Another adapted experiment from a ‘My First Science Book’. Very simple to set up. All you need is a balloon, beaker and an empty juice bottle: we found the smaller capacity ones were easier to work with.

Getting the bottle to stay fixed in an empty beaker once the boiling water is added is hard. We found jamming in plasticine just about works. The children loved this experiment and were keen to turn a ‘Boring balloon experiment’ into a tale of a national emergency.

SciCast Notes:

Nominee: Best Film by a Team which includes Primary School Students, 2008

Another simple experiment turned into something completely left-field. Love it. I’m particularly fond of the low angle shot of the balloon when the kettle comes in — oooh, menacing and scary!

Good script, too. This is a surprisingly complex film, with several elements, and it’s hard to keep that sort of thing straight while you’re filming it. But this is nicely coherent.

My favourite part of this, however, is the way what’s clearly a lab has been turned into a news studio — complete with graphics on the back screen, and… gas taps? Genius!
