Bridge engineering, in animation. With added modeling clay.
Director's Notes:
Heaven & Hell is a short animation about a new bridge opening. Lots of still images were taken to create movement of the characters. Our film begins with a news report about a train travelling on the new bridge but it collapses into the nearest river. The scientist characters explain that the bridge collapsed because the support was in the middle of the bridge and should have been shared equally at the sides! We have been learning about the structure of bridges in our World Around Us topic and brainstormed some ideas as a group to come up with this film. If we were to do the film again we would make more use of the tripod to keep the camera still for all the photos we took.
There were 5 people in our team. Our teacher helped show us how to use GarageBand to create a song and import it into iTunes so we could drop it into our film. We recorded our voice-overs directly into iMovie.
SciCast Notes:
I like the notes that came with this film. Some of our submissions come with a note scrawled in pencil that reads ‘It’s a film about fish’ or whatever, which doesn’t exactly add anything for the viewer. But this comes with a detailed description of how it was made, what the team were trying to include, and what they’d do differently next time.
That last bit’s crucial. No film is perfect, and thinking through what you’d avoid, leave out, put in, or try to repeat is really important. It’s how we get better.
So, I like this film, and I like the notes that came with it even more. I’ve no idea why it’s called ‘Heaven and Hell,’ though.
