Growing yeast inflates a balloon.

We had great fun making this film. The biggest problem we had was in setting the experiment up properly so that we got the result we wanted to show on film. The first time we set it up we added too much yeast and water so that the yeast bubbled up into the balloon and leaked all over the place. Another time the balloon had a small hole in it so it didn’t inflate. Another time, the balloon had actually been sucked back into the bottle! Eventually, we managed to catch it right though.

SciCast Notes:

This film sounds like it was a model of perseverance to make, but the effort pays off. The sound is good and clear, and despite there being lots of detail, the film still has a sense of fun and pace. There’s lots of thought, too, in explaining the science and putting it in some context, at the end.

My only real complaint is that the camera could have been much closer when the experiment was being set up. We’d have seen more detail to back up the dialogue.

That’s me being picky, though. It’s still a good film.
