The physics of sound, and how those clever background-cancelling headphones do their thing.
Director's Notes:
Those posh headphones that reduce noise acheive a difficult task! How on Earth do they work, and what physics is involved?
We were fortunate enough to be able to used a high-speed camera: look out for 300 frames/second video! Filming was mainly achieved in two hectic days of movie-making: some planning might have been worthwhile!
Nominee: IOP Best SciCast Physics Film (16+), 2010
SciCast Notes:
Brilliant!
There’s a huge amount of material in this film, from high-speed video of a slinky spring, through gorgeous shots of a ripple tank, to an elegant multi-track sound demonstration. And a random skeleton. An excellent script helps keep it all together, but the real star, for me, is the narration. Narrating this sort of thing isn’t easy, but the voice-over here is smooth, measured, and hits just the right level of performance.
Good physics and terrific production, even if most of it was made up as they went along. One of my favourites.
