Refraction and its impractical applications.

Director's Notes:

An entry from the Richmond School’s ‘Scientific Edge’ film competition 2007, which was based on SciCast. The team aimed for a charming vintage style, worked in some neat gags, and managed to secure permission to use a terrific piece of music that helps set the whole thing off.

Enjoy!

SciCast Notes:

Winner: Technical and Artistic Achievement, 2008

Winner: Best Entertainment Film, 2008

Nominee: Best Film, the Jurors’ Grand Prize 2008

This is great! It’s genuinely hard to pull of an old-fashioned ‘silent film’ style, but this team have absolutely nailed it. The music helps (the composer graciously agreed to his work being released under the required Creative Commons licenses), but the camerawork and effects are even more important.

I’m particularly impressed by the caption slides, which are stylistically spot on, and the overall story of the film. It could have been plain ridiculous, but the visual gags play on the presentation style whilst making you think about the physics.

Terrific work!
