An introduction to quarks, with animations, diagrams, and pictures.

Director's Notes:

It’s hard to do demonstrations about subatomic particles unless you happen to have a giant accelerator under your back garden: see the CERN Podcast for more on that. Meanwhile, here’s a quick introduction to the subject, done with felt-tipped pens.

For a somewhat more in-depth introduction, here’s the Wikipedia page on Quarks.

SciCast Notes:

I like this!

An excellent mix of styles, confident presentation, a bit of wit, and stopping before the joke’s worn thin — great judgement, and very nicely put together.

People often fret about music, and it’s true that it can be a licensing minefield and/or extremely time-consuming. This film makes excellent use of the podcasting tracks included with Garageband — if you have access to a Mac, it’ll probably already have a whole load of music like this that’s pre-licensed for just this sort of work.

See our notes on music for some other options.
